Understanding dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is the controlled scraping of the top layers of the skin to remove scars from acne or accidents. This will tend to smooth out fine facial wrinkles such as those that we usually see around the mouth. Local anesthesia and a sedative are usually used during the procedure.

It involves the use of a high speed hand held rotary instrument with a rough wire brush or diamond impregnated burr. Afterwards the skin is treated with ointment, a wet dressing, a dry treatment or some combination. There is redness and swelling as well as some pain, tingling, burning or itching which can be controlled by medication. The side effects usually subside within a few days from treatment. Mechanical dermabrasion with either a diamond fraise or a wire brush is an effective tool in correction of deeper skin abnormalities like acne scarring.
